As you think about home repairs and renovations, why not take up our offer of a free, independent assessment of how your home rates when it comes to energy use and what you can do to make improvements. Energy-saving measures can be anything from simple, low-cost changes through to insulation, heating or double-glazing.

The two-hour free assessment, by a trained 'coach' from service provider Home&dry, looks at everything from heating and lighting to water use. They will give you impartial advice, simple tips and a detailed action plan tailored to your needs and budget.

The assessor will bring a range of easy-to-install products - such as flow restrictors for taps, hot water pipe lagging and energy efficient light bulbs - and put them in on the spot if you want them to. A low-flow shower head, for example, will reduce water flow from 18 litres per minute to 7.5 litres. We will pay 50 percent of the cost of these up to a total of $115.

If you are on a tight budget, the coach can also explain the help on offer for insulation and energy efficient heating systems through the Government's Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart scheme.

The Home Energy Saver programme is part of our award-winning Climate Change Action Plan, with a goal to help 800 households make their homes more energy efficient. More than 100 homes have been assessedmsince it was launched in August last year.
