Wellington Response to RWC Announcement

30 March 2011

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says Wellington welcomes the opportunity to host the Scotland-Argentina RWC2011 match on 25 September as a result of the Christchurch quake.

"However we do so in the knowledge of what Christchurch has sacrificed."

Cr John Morrison, Wellington City Council's Sports and Events Portfolio Leader, says today's match announcement is a bittersweet moment.

"The show must go on - and Scotland vs Argentina will be a great match - but our thoughts are with Canterbury just the same."

Cr Morrison says it is too early to quantify the economic ramifications of the extra match in Wellington but he believes any extra costs will be minimal.

"An extra game will create additional demands in areas such as logistics, transport planning, accommodation, and team services. However, our comprehensive planning has us in a good position and we can comfortably accommodate the extra game."
