National Memorial Service for Christchurch
16 March 2011
The national memorial service for Christchurch will be broadcast on a large screen in the TSB Bank Arena at Queens Wharf on Friday and all are welcome to pay their respects.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown is travelling to Christchurch for the service so Deputy Mayor Ian McKinnon will represent Wellington City at the screening, and other local VIPs are expected to attend.
Councillor McKinnon says the Council recognises that many Wellingtonians have shown a real empathy for the people of Christchurch in the situation they are facing and will want to support this service as a further display of unity. "We also know there are now a number of Christchurch families in Wellington and this will enable them to 'stand as one' at this difficult time."
Doors will open at 12 noon and the broadcast starts at 12.30pm. There will be two minutes silence at 12.51pm.
There will be seating in the gallery and also tiered seating on the main floor. People are asked to allow plenty of time for parking and finding a seat once inside.
A small space will also be provided in Wellington Central Library for people to watch the broadcast.
