Cobblestone Park, located on Vivian Street next to the Victoria University Faculty of Architecture and Design, has been given a major facelift.

The work took about six months. Designed by a group of consultants led by Wraight and Associates Ltd, with work carried out by Juno Civil Ltd, the park includes new walls, paths, lawns, planter beds, lights, seats, screens and a playground.

Council project manager Pete McEvoy says the upgrade was needed because the previous design and layout didn't meet the needs of visitors to the park.

"It was appropriate when it was built in the '70s, but the increase in population and need for more open space in the city meant the park needed work."

It is hoped the redevelopment will encourage more people to use the park, improve safety and provide better pedestrian routes as part of a larger central area network.

The work cost $1 million and was completed at the end of June. Pete says the improvements have transformed the park into a practical and attractive place.

"And just a note of thanks to Victoria University, the New Zealand Transport Agency, local residents and members of the public - thanks for your patience while the work took place. We hope you like it."
