A community that works effectively is made up of people who make connections at a personal level by talking and listening to each other.
Ethnic poster design winner Michael Javier
Our ethnic communities recognised the value of personal connections when they asked us, around a decade ago, to provide them with a regular formal get-together to give them a forum to build relationships.
We suggested setting up a series of ethnic forums. They agreed, and now ethnic forums are held regularly. They give us a way of informing, understanding and responding to the community's needs and offer people a chance to learn about our services. Matters raised in forums are logged and followed up.
The next ethnic forum will be held next month on 4 May at Te Papa, and will focus on the draft Annual Plan and Rugby World Cup 2011. We ran a poster design competition in the ethnic community for this forum and the winner, Michael Javier, is pictured with his work.
If you'd like to know more about ethnic forums please call Alice Hang, the Council's Ethnic Communities Adviser, on (04) 499 4444.
