Cable Car History
19 April 2010
Many Wellingtonians have caught one of the iconic cable cars that swiftly climb from Lambton Quay to Kelburn - but how many pause to think about the story behind them?
Cable car driver shows off the car's finer points
That history is revealed in an affordable, escorted tour that starts in the Museum of Wellington City & Sea.
You'll then take the cable car up to Kelburn for some of the best views in Wellington. At the Cable Car Museum you'll learn how the cable cars' life began in 1898, when the Kelburn and Karori Tramway Company was founded to build a tramway between the city and the new suburb of Kelburn.
The tour finishes with refreshments at the Skyline restaurant. If you have friends staying from out of town, this is an entertaining tour they will enjoy.
Ticket price $29. Book at the Museum of Wellington City & Sea.
