Lyall Bay Beach Buildings: Public Meeting

19 October 2009

Wellington City Council is to hold a public meeting next Thursday 22 October to discuss issues relating to the future of the four buildings on Lyall Bay Beach including the fire-damaged Maranui Surf Club.

The meeting, starting at 7.30pm, will be in the St Catherine's College Hall, Upper Bourke Street, Kilbirnie.

This meeting follows strong public interest in the future of the Maranui Surf Club building which was badly damaged by fire in August.

There has been some controversy in the past couple of months over the possible fate of the building - and Council staff have been asked to prepare a report on this issue and the bigger picture relating to facilities on Lyall Bay beach. The report is scheduled to be considered by the Mayor and Councillors at a meeting next month.

Thursday's public meeting aims to set out all the issues for the community - especially people living in Lyall Bay and the surf-lifesaving community.

Council staff will give a presentation on all the facts relating to the Maranui building and the three other buildings on the beachfront, including the Lyall Bay Surf Club building.

A meeting facilitator will then lead a discussion that aims to gauge what the community and interest groups think about the future for the four buildings on the beach including the Maranui building. No proposals will be presented to the meeting by the Council, nor are any decisions expected from the meeting.
