Menz Shed Set Up
31 August 2009
For Wellington men, a shed is a great place to have a cup of tea and a chat, as well as a space to take up their tools again. Menz Shed was established in June this year for retired or unemployed men to use their skills
while developing friendships. Their 'shed away from sheds' at 6 - 8 Haining Street, Te Aro, is now being measured up for workbenches.
Menz Shed is supported by a Wellington City Council grant and Regional Public Health, and housed by the Sisters of Compassion Trust. The Council's Grants Manager, Jenny Rains, says it is exactly the kind of group that the Council wants to fund.
"Once they get their work benches in, they can continue with ease on community projects that they've already begun - such as repairing furniture for Refugee Services and making 'cat play stations' for Wellington's Cats Protection League," she says.
Menz Shed has a core group of 10 'sheddies' who meet every Thursday from 10.30am - 12.30pm. There is often a presentation from a guest at these meetings.
