IHC and Council in a Team Approach to Fitness

17 August 2009

The IHC Wellington Association is offering free membership at the Council's Club Active gyms to people with intellectual disabilities.

The offer is open to anyone with an intellectual disability in Wellington city and applies to Club Active facilities at Freyberg Pool and the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie.

Members can use the gyms' weights and cardio equipment, attend group fitness classes and swim in the pools.

People with disabilities go to the gym on their own, or with a support worker, and Club Active staff work closely with them to ensure they get the most out of their gym experience.

Trish Anderson, deputy chair of the IHC Wellington Association, says they are able to offer this scheme thanks to the generous support of Wellingtonians who donate to IHC each year.

"The scheme is paid for through fundraising - it aims to give people with intellectual disabilities a chance to have independence, be healthy and make social connections."

The Council supports this scheme by offering IHC a subsidised rate.
