Rugby World Cup: Update on Capital Planning

17 July 2009

Wellington businesspeople are invited to a forum next Thursday 23 July to get an update on planning for the region's approach to the Rugby World Cup 2011.

Mayor Kerry Prendergast, who will host the forum, says September 2011 will be a "huge" month as thousands of rugby fans from around the world pour into the region.

"Next week's meeting is an opportunity for local business people to find out just how advanced the preparations are for the tournament. We expect people in the local retail and hospitality sectors will find the forum particularly interesting and useful.

"For those people who benefited from the 2005 Lions rugby tour - and who remembered how the city buzzed - then the forum will give them a good insight into how much bigger a deal the World Cup will be."

The forum will include:

  • A briefing by Martin Snedden, Chief Executive of Rugby New Zealand 2011
  • A briefing on the Major Events Management Act by Robert Rendle, Senior Solicitor at the Ministry of Economic Development
  • An open forum to discuss issues, questions and ideas.
