An economic partnership agreement was signed in 1997 and renewed again in 1998 by Deputy Mayor Kerry Prendergast and Deputy Mayor Bai Hsiu-Hsiung.
In February of 2015 Mayor Celia Wade-Brown signed a new partnership agreement during a visit to Taipei. Wellington and Taipei agreed to co-operation in the areas of knowledge sharing in local government best practice, cultural and creative industry exchanges, youth provision and education development, and trade and tourism.
Councillor Simon Marsh travelled to Taipei to attend the Velo-city Global 2016 conference in February 2016.
Mayor Wade-Brown met with Mayor Ko Wen-je during a recent trip to Singapore in July 2016 where they were both attending the World Cities Summit.
