Solar radiation

Wellington City Council does not guarantee the accuracy of solar information on any site.

Vertical Datums

For 40 years, most heights in Wellington have been measured in relation to a reference surface called Wellington Vertical Datum 1953. There is now a national height datum called the New Zealand Vertical Datum 2016 (NZVD2016). In Wellington, the difference between the two datums is approximately 40cm. When using heights, it is important to know which datum was used. As an example, an object that has a height of 10.0m in relation to Wellington Vertical Datum 1953, will have a height of approximately 9.6m in relation to NZVD 2016. Current mean sea level has a height that is about 12cm below the reference surface for NZVD 2016 or about 28cm above the reference surface for Wellington Vertical Datum 1953. The +28cm is because of ground movement and sea level rise since 1953.
