Permissions & consents

First check with the Council whether you need permission to put up a sign or poster.

Some popular types of signs are listed below. There are various restrictions about what types of signs can go where, for example, in heritage areas and near the airport. There are different rules for temporary or permanent signs.

You may be told to get written permission from the Council or a landowner, or get a resource or building consent. Contact:

You must get permission from the Asset Manager if you want to fix a sign to a building or erect a sign in the grounds owned by Council's City Housing. Contact:

Temporary signs on public property 

Temporary signs on public property must be no larger than 3 square metres in area.

Election campaign signs on public property 

Signs related to elections and election campaigns must be applied for separately.
