Accessibility awards

The Wellington Accessibility Awards are designed to recognise businesses, initiatives and people who help make Wellington City more accessible for everyone.

2019 will be the second year that the Accessibility Awards are presented.

These awards are presented annually by Wellington City Council in a joint ceremony alongside the Wellington Airport Community Awards.

There are five award categories: 

  • Accessibility Champion Award
  • Accessible Initiative Award
  • Accessible Workplace Award
  • Customer Service Award
  • Innovative Design in Accessibility Award

Nominations

Nominations for the 2019 Accessibility Awards close at 5pm, Friday 7 June 2019 – late or incomplete nominations will not be accepted.

You can also download the form specific to the category award and submit your nomination:

  • by email to: accessibility@wcc.govt.nz
  • by post to:

  • by video: complete section A of the form specific to the category award and make a 3-minute video using New Zealand sign language answering the questions in sections B-D.
    • Email a URL link to your video to: accessibility@wcc.govt.nz. Please do not send your video as an attachment as we may not receive it due to file size restrictions. Instead we recommend you use a streaming platform such as YouTube, Vimeo etc. to host your video – just remember to set your privacy settings accordingly when uploading.

We also accept hand-written nominations.

Who can be nominated

The eligibility criteria is detailed on the nomination form specific to the category award.

We welcome all eligible nominations, including:

  • nominations from individuals and groups
  • self-nomination
  • recipients from the previous year – if the nomination relates to a different project, initiative or design from which they previously received the award
  • previous finalists and nominees – if they meet the eligibility criteria.

You can nominate a person or organisation for more than one award.

Accessibility Champion Award

This award recognises a person or organisation who has made a significant contribution to improving accessibility in Wellington.

This award recognises an initiative that improves the accessibility of places, services or information in Wellington.

This award recognises workplaces that have gone the extra mile to eliminate barriers to employment.

Customer Service Award

This award recognises customer service that has gone the extra mile to eliminate barriers to participation. This award is intended to recognise organisations that do not specialise in accessibility but have made it a priority to consider access in the way that they interact with their customers.

Innovative Design in Accessibility Award

This award recognises innovative design that improves accessibility in Wellington. This award is intended to recognise organisations that do not specialise in accessibility but have made it a priority to consider access in the way that they interact with their customers.

Awards ceremony

Nominators and nominees are invited to the awards ceremony, usually held in late July. Details of the ceremony will be released closer to the time.
