Indoor pools

In Wellington, there are five Council-run indoor pools that are open all year.

COVID-19 update – Alert Level 2

Opening hours

Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre, Freyberg Pool and Fitness Centre, Keith Spry Pool, Karori Pool and Tawa Pool are now open for lane swimming and recreational swimming. SwimWell swim school is open for some programmes.

Opening hours timetable: Public swimming times during Alert Level 2 (105KB PDF)

  • We are now open for lane swimming and limited recreational swimming.  Numbers and times are restricted so we can ensure spacing between swimmers.
  • Public swims, club swims and swimming lessons continue to take place separately.  Where it is safe some smaller bookings will take place alongside public lane swimming at off peak times.
  • All saunas, steam rooms remain closed.

Recreational swimming space & children’s areas

We are providing limited space for recreational swimming in our main pools (for play swimming), and we will be re-opening some children’s spaces at our pools to allow for recreational swimming for our younger customers (with their supervisor of course).

  • We will have no play equipment or features available in these spaces to ensure hygiene standards are adhered to.
  • Please maintain physical distancing while in these spaces and be aware we may restrict entry if we reach capacity in these spaces.
  • Please note: The children’s pool at Karori Pool and our Spray Pool at WRAC are closed, however, we do have child friendly spaces at WRAC, Keith Spry & Tawa Pools.

Active supervision

We are making some changes to our Active Supervision requirements at level 2 to ensure physical distancing is managed well by supervisors. Please adhere to the following at all times:

  • Children up to age 10 must be actively supervised by a caregiver over the age of 16.
  • All children under 7 must have a caregiver swimming in the water with them.
  • Children under the age of 5 must have a caregiver within arms-reach at all times.

Our spas at WRAC, Karori and Keith Spry Pools will open during public lane swimming times from Tuesday 2 June. These spa pools are opening as we are able to better ensure physical distancing.

  • At Karori and Keith Spry Pool we will have maximum numbers of 5 at any time, and will be adults only at this stage to ensure restrictions are manageable. During times of peak demand we will ask spa goers to restrict their time to 15mins to allow others to access.
  • At WRAC we will be managing the spas with a booking system. Please contact our team directly on-site or by phone for details.

Contact tracing

  • You must enrol your details at reception to allow us to contact trace. We will be using our bookings and membership system for this. We may occasionally use the Rippl app at our facilities too.
  • Please be mindful that there may be delays at reception while we make sure every customer is recorded in our system for contact tracing purposes.

Health and safety

  • Payment via contactless methods only (Paywave Eftpos).
  • Maintain your distance from other swimmers and avoid resting at the end of the lane at the same time. Staff will be patrolling lanes more than usual to make sure social distancing measures are in place.
  • We will have an increased cleaning routine to help ensure your health and safety.

Help us reduce congestion and wait times

  • Please keep swim sessions short and try to swim during off-peak hours to ensure any wait times are minimal.
  • Please get changed and showered at home and only use changing rooms if you really need to.
