Beginners areas

Get back on your bike for the first time in years, take your kids, or just brush up on your skills.

Three people riding down a drit track on mountain bikes.

South Coast kids' track – Island Bay

Thanks to a group of parents in Island Bay and the Wellington Mountain bike club, the southern suburbs now has one of the best beginners' tracks in NZ. This track has:

  • wide open corners
  • useful signage with tips and tricks
  • heaps of different features.

It's suitable for anyone new to bike riding or mountain biking.

Check out South Coast Kids Track Facebook page for more information.

Juvie (new family friendly track), Dual Slalom and kids' track – Miramar

The new Juvenile Track is perfect for the whole family. Start on Main Road, Miramar. Just past the water tower, you'll descend through native bush on a nice wide track. During the 20 minute loop you'll take in the views over Miramar and then ride up to the top of the ridge.

The Dual Slalom is great for kids who want to learn basic skills, including riding over bumps and around corners, and they can race mum or dad too! There is also:

  • a pump track
  • a basic skills area for kids
  • more challenging tracks for parents.

Check out the Miramar Track Project Facebook page for more information.

Mount Victoria skills area

Nestled away on the Hataitai side of Mount Victoria, this skills area is full of features and obstacles. It's the perfect place to improve your mountain biking skills. The skills area is just behind the Hataitai badminton hall and is ideal for beginners or those wanting a break from riding Mount Victoria. Access from Alexandra Road, opposite the Tennis Club.
