School holidays at Wellington Botanic Garden.

Holiday programmes

Get your kids exploring the magic of the Wellington Botanic Garden.

Sprout scouts (4-6 years)

It's a short session (two hours, 10am-12 noon) with our educators, where children and their caregivers enjoy the garden through crafts, games and a nature walk. 

Meet at the Learning Pavilion in the Discovery Garden. All children attending must be booked in. 

Cost $10 per child, payable on booking. Please check before booking underage children by emailing gardens.education@wcc.govt.nz.

Garden explorers (5-12 years)

It's a full-day, drop-off programme led by our awesome team of garden educators, where children can explore the magic of Wellington Botanic Garden through bushwalks, games and activities.

Meet at the Learning Pavilion in the Discovery Garden at 8:30am. Pick up no later than 3:30pm.

Cost from $50 per child, payable on booking.

Tuesday 15 January: Sprout Scouts

For ages 4 to 6-year-olds
Booking is essential. Please check before booking in underage children by emailing gardens.education@wcc.govt.nz

Wednesday 16 January: Garden Explorers – Wild Adventurers
Full-day (drop off no earlier than 8:30am, pick up no later than 3:30pm)
For ages 5 to 12-year-olds
Join us for a scavenger hunt of epic proportions: learn to make special “potions”, and complete exciting quests that will take us on a journey all over the realm of the Botanic Gardens.

Thursday 17 January: Garden Explorers – Bush Campers
Full-day (drop off no earlier than 8:30am, pick up no later than 3:30pm)
For ages 5 to 12-year-olds
Set up camp and explore the plants that help to heal us in our lotions and potions garden and beyond. Discover other ways that plants keep us healthy and try out some recipes straight from the garden!

Friday 18 January: Garden Explorers at Otari – Eco Warriors
Full-day (drop off no earlier than 8:30am, pick up no later than 3:30pm) meet at the Otari info centre
For ages 5 to 12-year-olds
Explore Otari Wilton Bush’s habitat hideouts and discover why our plants and animals choose to live in the places they do.  Meet some of our long term residents and picnic with the oldest giant in town.  Don’t forget your gumboots! Meet at the Otari information centre.

Tuesday 22 January: Garden Explorers – Taking Flight
Full-day (drop off no earlier than 8:30am, pick up no later than 3:30pm)
For ages 5 to 12-year-olds
Take a trip around the gardens spying all the things that fly. Discover how plants like to travel and complete a series of challenges, building different airborne creations and testing them out.

Thursday 24 January: Garden Explorers – Painting with Plants
Full-day (drop off no earlier than 8:30am, pick up no later than 3:30pm)
For ages 5 to 12-year-olds
Investigate how plants give our clothes colour as we experiment making different plant dyes and designs to create our ‘one of a kind’ Discovery Garden garments. (Please bring a plain t-shirt with you to decorate.)

Friday 25 January: Garden Explorers at Otari – Plant Detectives
Full-day (drop off no earlier than 8:30am, pick up no later than 3:30pm) meet at the Otari info centre
For ages 5 to 12-year-olds
There are secrets to discover at Otari- see if you can crack the case with our mini mystery trail and uncover the truth about how plants find their place in the forest. Meet at the Otari info centre.
