Skills courses

There are a variety of courses available to improve your cycling skills and confidence on the road.

Kids practice their cycling skills on an off-road track

The Greater Wellington Regional Council offers courses through the Pedal Ready programme for anyone who wants to get more comfortable on a bike.

School children

Schools can arrange for students from Year 4 onwards to learn cycle safety skills.

Students:

  • are taught basic safety information about bikes and helmets
  • are given an understanding of road signs and the road rules
  • go through practice exercises to improve riding skills, such as starting off and stopping with control, steering and manoeuvring safely, riding in a straight line, using hand signals, looking behind and emergency braking
  • are taught how to do safety checks and maintain their bike

The course aims to give children the confidence and skills to ride safely to school and home again. It offers cycle skills compliant with the New Zealand Transport Agency's Cycle skills guidelines.
