In its fourth year, Council has collaborated with a number of organisations to put on tours, events, exhibitions, and activities for everyone with a Gold Card to enjoy.
Mayor Justin Lester says our senior citizens contribute to the diverse culture of the city, and active participation promotes inclusive and healthy communities.
“We’re proud to be connecting people of all ages across the region, and this popular programme of events really fits within our Long-term plan by supporting activities and initiatives that focus on our older residents,” he says.
“This event is just a part of our commitment towards providing activities, facilities, and services to encourage and support the capital’s older residents to enjoy, engage, and participate in the community.”
This year, the jam-packed Te Wiki Kaumātua Seniors' Week programme runs from 15-21 October, with events including everything from walking netball, Zumba gold, a Spring Dance, an afternoon movie and tea, and a guided tour of Government House which includes refreshments.
Social Development portfolio lead Councillor Brian Dawson, says the popularity of Te Wiki Kaumātua Seniors’ Week demonstrates a need for activities for older residents around the region.
“This week of events is always highly anticipated, and the attendance numbers reflect that – so perhaps we need to provide more events all year round to keep the older community engaged, motivated, and having fun.
“Seniors’ Week is also a good opportunity for us to promote all the services available on our website, rates rebates, community centres, how to get around town easier with accessibility maps, mobility parking, and mobility scooter hire, and discounted rates for our facilities with our Leisure Card,” adds Councillor Dawson.
