Love Food Hate Waste is an international campaign that aims to raise awareness about the need to reduce food waste and help people take action with a few easy changes to their lifestyle and shopping practices.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown understands food waste is a substantial issue in New Zealand with the average family throwing three full shopping trolleys of uneaten food into the bin each year.
The Love Food Hate Waste NZ website has some easy practical everyday things that can be done at home like meal planning, portion sizes, great storage advice, fridge and freezer tips, understanding expiry dates, what to shop for, recipes, what to do with leftovers and lots more.
“Food is a fundamental part of our lives and a lot gets wasted. Let’s stop throwing money in to the bin while people go hungry. If we reduce our food wastage, we save money and reduce environmental impact at the same time,” says Mayor Wade-Brown. “There are great tips on the Love Food Hate Waste website.”
Wellington City Council is one of 59 Councils collaborating to deliver the Love Food Hate Waste message nationwide.
First on the agenda for Wellington City Council is partnering with organisations, community groups and food waste champions to deliver food waste workshops and spread the message.
Our Love Food Hate Waste team will also be getting out and about across the Wellington region with our Love Food Hate Waste stand at market days and events throughout 2016 and 2017.
On the stands, there’ll be information to take away, giveaways, competitions with great prizes, and even a chance to have a spin on the awesome 'shredding bicycle blender', courtesy of the guys at Bicycle Junction.
If you’d like to be involved in the Wellington region campaign or have a food waste story to share, please get in touch with one of our team – they’d love to hear from you.
