About the review

The Council is reviewing issues relating to public places in Wellington. These are governed by the Public Places Bylaw.

The bylaw is reviewed every 10 years.

As part of the review, we are also proposing to restructure the bylaw to make it easier for people to access the information relevant to them.

This is a summary of the proposed changes:

  • Extend the Evans Bay freedom camping site
  • Amend powers to manage damage to public places
  • Clarify that informal or casual play on Council grounds does not require prior Council approval
  • Highlight the existing offence to deposit a cigarette butt outside of a provided receptacle in any public place
  • Ensure the bylaw is fit for purpose
  • Ensure the offences and breaches of the bylaw are clearly identifiable
  • Update the meaning and interpretation of definitions and a number of provisions
  • Make minor clarifications and remove outdated references
