Background information

Currently the council operates a walkway through the Mt Victoria tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists. This access through the tunnel is the most direct route for pedestrians and cyclists travelling to and from the eastern suburbs of Wellington. Other longer routes include over Mt Victoria or via Evans Bay Parade. The tunnel is also a heavily used State Highway 1 route that links to the airport.
