Capital 150

On 25 July 2015, we celebrated 150 years as the capital – and of course, you can’t have a birthday without a party!

We celebrated Wellington's status as the seat of Parliament and New Zealand's capital with free public events - including tours around some of our rarest and most significant national collections, and concerts with national arts organisations like Opera New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

At 5pm, MC James Nokise and nearly 100,000 Wellingtonians kicked off a party on the steps of Parliament. Dave Dobbyn and the Orpheus Choir led a very special rendition of Happy Birthday and the crowd was entertained with a spectacular 3D light and sound show that brought the city's history to life.
