Wellington Urban Growth Plan

The Wellington Urban Growth Plan is the Council’s strategy for managing the city’s growth over the next 30 years. Our plan ensures that as the city’s population increases, new houses, transport networks, infrastructure, and services are developed sustainably and in areas that benefit the city the most so that residents continue to enjoy a world-class quality of life.

District Plan

Subdivision design

At subdivision level, the Council’s District Plan includes a Subdivision Design Guide which contains sustainability principles and techniques. This is currently being revised as part of Plan Change 46 to further strengthen the sustainability components.

Renewable energy

The renewable energy chapter of the District Plan aims at encouraging efficiency in energy use, and the development and use of energy from renewable sources.

Code of Practice for Land Development

The Council’s Code of Practice for Land Development also guides development by focusing on minimum standards for design and construction of infrastructure such as earthworks, roading, water and drainage.
