Johnsonville Road and mall

Overview
The Council is currently working on a number of projects in Johnsonville.
Johnsonville Library
In 2011, we investigated four potential sites for expanding the Johnsonville library. In the Long Term Plan, we allocated $18.5 million in capital expenditure over 3 years for a new library.
Work is due to start on the new library in 2015/16.
The library will be located next to Keith Spry Pool and Johnsonville Community Centre. It will be developed in a way that creates an integrated community-facilities hub for Johnsonville.
Next Steps
In 2015, detailed design work will begin on the combined library, community centre and pool. There will be plenty of opportunities to contribute to this design.

Alex Moore Park
The Council is considering the following two projects for the park:
Artificial Turf
The Council is looking at laying artificial turf at the park and has completed an investigation for a geotechnical report on the project.
Funding for the project will be considered through the Council's Long Term Plan process.
New Sports Centre
Alex Moore Park Sports and Community Events Incorporated is leading a project to build a new sports centre at the park. The Council is looking at creating additional off-street parking to support the new sports centre.
Johnsonville Mall Redevelopment
The Council has granted Diversified NZ Property Fund and DNZ Property Fund Ltd (DNZ) a resource consent to redevelop Johnsonville Shopping Centre over five years. This consent is for the first stage of the project and allows for the construction and redevelopment of shops, pedestrian areas, parking areas and vehicle access to service shops.
The redevelopment of the mall will occur in two stages. Once stage one is underway, DNZ will decide whether to continue with stage two of the work.
Stage One
The first stage involves:
- redeveloping and upgrading the existing shopping centre. Note, the shops along the following streets will largely remain untouched by this stage of the project:
- Johnsonville Road (south of Hawea Street)
- Broderick Road (at the north-east corner, where it meets Johnsonville Road)
- constructing a separate four-level parking building for a maximum of 1,280 car parks. This will sit in the south-west corner of the site, where there are plans to also build the centre's management offices, a few shops and a gymnasium.
The Council has approved DNZ's request for a change to the original consent. The revised design plan is similar to the one approved in the original consent, but it includes:
- minor changes to the façades of some of the existing buildings on Broderick Road and Johnsonville Road
- greater pedestrian access from Johnsonville Road.
For more information on the revised design plan, see:
Stage Two
If DNZ decides to continue the redevelopment work of Johnsonville Shopping Centre, they will request a resource consent from the Council for a further period of 10 years.
The second stage of construction involves:
- redeveloping the existing shops along the following streets:
- Johnsonville Road (south of Hawea Street)
- Broderick Road (at the north-east corner, where it meets Johnsonville Road)
- Building rooftop car parking facilities on Hawea Street and Broderick Road
- creating additional car parks. During stage one and stage two of the project, a total of up to 1,380 car parks will be built, including parking for 80 vehicles at the Countdown supermarket.
