Library staff have been travelling up and down Ara Moana on the BookBike, a tandem bicycle that doubles as a mobile library, greeting passers-by and bringing them books, magazines and eBooks from the collection.
It’s no problem if you’re not a member – soon staff will be able to sign up new library members on the go.
“Wellington City Libraries are using a number of ways to reach out into the community and the BookBike is a great way to bring books to people,” says Mayor Justin Lester.
“Some lucky people can choose from pre-loved books that have come to the end of their life on the library shelves. It’s lovely to see our books find new homes.”
Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons, who holds the library portfolio, says BookBike staff will soon be able to lend books and even sign-up new members with the Carl.Connect app.
“It’s a web version of our regular library system that lets us sign up new library members on the go. People will still require ID and proof of address to sign up, but that can be shown on a phone.
“In the future we’re also planning to use it for mobile issues and returns as well. It’s not in regular use yet but we’re excited to develop it further and use it more frequently!”
