Iconic Wellington architect firm engaged for new library project

25 September 2015

Celebrated Wellington firm Athfield Architects has been hired to design the new $16.5 million Johnsonville Library.

The new library in Moorefield Road, at 1800 square metres, will be much larger than the existing library in Broderick Road. It will offer a flexible, modern library space providing the latest technology for visitors. The new library will be adjacent to the Keith Spry Pool and Johnsonville Community Centre.

Wellington City Councillor Sarah Free, the Council’s Community Facilities Portfolio Leader, says: “this is a fantastic opportunity to create an integrated community facility for the Johnsonville community. Families will be able to enjoy the pool, a new modern library and community centre all in one visit.”

Councillor Paul Eagle, the Chair of the Council’s Community, Sport and Recreation Committee, says: “this is a flagship development for the Council – it’ll make a real difference for the local community.

“We’re planning a smart, sustainable, building that will provide a great precedent for future community projects.”

The project’s first milestone - concept design - is due to be completed by November 2015. Detailed design will be completed by September 2016. Construction will begin in 2017, and completion is planned for May 2018.

There will be opportunities for community input into the project. Community consultation will take place at each design stage. People can keep up to date with project developments by signing up to a regular project update by emailing johnsonvillelibrarydevelopment@wcc.govt.nz.
