Cycle Panel Proposes Route Options

5 August 2014

We’d like to thank the panel of Wellingtonians that last week made recommendations on ways to make Berhampore and Newtown safer and easier places to get about by bike.

The panel has recommended two cycling routes, and a possible future third route

The citizens’ advisory panel, which was established to consider the multiple options and determine the best routes and ways to make a difference in these areas (the second stage of the Island Bay to city cycleway), has recommended:

  • Adelaide Road (from Dee Street), Luxford Street, Rintoul Street, Waripori Street, Russell Terrace and Riddiford Street to the John Street intersection
  • Adelaide Road (from Dee Street), Stoke Street and Hanson Street to the John Street intersection.

It believes the routes will provide choice, convenience and safety. A key consideration was keeping any parking loss to a minimum. For some places the panel suggests alternatives to dedicated cycling space, including lower speed limits.

Routes involving Berhampore Golf Course and the perimeter of Martin Luckie Park were not favoured mainly because they weren’t direct enough and there were concerns about night safety. The northern end of Rintoul Street had potential but wasn’t included because of bus-related safety concerns.

Councillors will consider the panel’s recommendations at a meeting on 21 August and decide on the next steps, which will include wider public consultation. Council staff will do more work to show the different ways the cycling routes could be developed.

There is no detail yet on what changes might be proposed on these streets but there will be plenty of opportunities for people living in these areas to have a say before any decisions are made. The panel’s report is available on our website.

Next steps in Island Bay

The design of the kerbside cycle lanes proposed along The Parade between Shorland Park and Wakefield Park (the first stage of the Island Bay to city cycleway) is nearing completion following open days and discussions with residents.

We expect to make the final plan available and advertise the traffic changes required to develop these new lanes next month. This will be the last chance for people to have a say before Councillors make a final decision.
