A group of Island Bay parents and Wellington City Council have created the South Coast Kids Track on Town Belt land opposite Wakefield Park. This 500m off-road bike track caters for children as young as three.

Council project manager David Halliday says parents wanted a place where children could master basic cycling skills in a safe and fun environment. “It will appeal to all ages, skills and bike types – even beginner parents.”

He says the city has facilities for more experienced children but there was a gap for young children.

The bottom loop of the track is for beginners. The downhill run starts out through the trees for the more confident rider and an uphill section provides the biggest challenge. David says the outside of the dirt berms will be covered with native plants in keeping with the south coast. One planting session has already been completed.

The track has been built with sponsorship from Trail Fund NZWellington Mountain Bike Club and Bike Wellington.
