Start by grabbing the list of 50 book titles and enter our libraries’ Kids Summer Reading Challenge at wcl.govt.nz. For every book review readers complete online, they enter a draw to win prizes including games, toys and vouchers.

Last year our five top readers were all girls, but this year the boys might fight back. There are great books of all kinds from comics to fantasy, fact and fiction, to award-winning New Zealand books. Reviews are all published online and prize-winners will be announced in February.

But if action is what’s needed, then the holiday programmes at our recreation centres are packed with excitement. For the first time, they’ll all go head-to-head in the Epic Sports Tournament on Friday 24 January at ASB Sports Centre.

Around 200 kids aged 5-13 enrolled at ASB, Karori, Nairnville and Tawa holiday programmes will compete in football, touch, nukemball and floorball. Kilbirnie Sports will provide trophies for the winning teams.

The fun is endless at ASB Sports Centre. There’s a Mega Inflatables Day especially for children enrolled at Tawa and Nairnville holiday programmes on Friday 17 January. Bouncy castles and all sorts of other inflatables will fill six indoor courts. The bouncy castles fun will be open to the public on Saturday 18 January.

Things get a bit spooky at ASB on Harry Potter Day on Wednesday 22 January with the Muggle version of Quidditch. Children will learn to care for ‘magical creatures’, make pet rocks and paint their own wands.

Then get ready for a massive water fight on ‘Wet and Wild’ day on Monday 27 January. Come with a water pistol, a water bottle, or soak a sponge in water and get drenched (bring togs and towel or a change of clothes).

For something different, try Pirates Day, Disney Day and Detective Day.

Holiday programmes are filling up fast, so for more information and to book, see:
