Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA)

WREDA is the new regional economic development agency for the lower North Island, combining the economic development activities of Wellington City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council to advance the prosperity and liveability of the Wellington region.

WREDA combines the political and commercial clout of the region to drive innovation and economic activity, and enhance the region’s reputation as a centre of world-class film, IT, education, arts, food and tourism. It brings together the major events, and the functions and activities done in the past by the following agencies:

Chair and Board

In October 2014 Peter Biggs was appointed as chair of the WREDA Board, which represents a diverse and skilled range of advocates for the region.

Chief Executive

Chris Whelan is the first Chief Executive for the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency.

Chris is tasked with leading WREDA's vision for Wellington to be the most liveable, prosperous and vibrant city region in Australasia by 2025.

Chris comes to Wellington from South Africa, where he was most recently Chief Executive of Accelerate Cape Town, that region’s premier business leadership group. Previously he was Chief Knowledge Officer for EY Asia-Pacific in Sydney, leading a team across the region. Chris has worked extensively in strategy and business transformation in Africa and the Asia Pacific region, and has served on the Boards of Cape Town Design and Wesgro, the region’s trade, investment and tourism promotion agency.
