Wellington City Council offers a variety of services and opportunities to its senior citizens.

The Council has developed its Older Persons Policy and aligned it with New Zealand's Positive Ageing Strategy to establish the following goals for Wellington's senior citizens:

  • affordable and appropriate housing options
  • affordable and accessible transport options
  • increased opportunities for personal growth and community participation
  • equitable, timely, affordable and accessible health services
  • increased safety and security
  • elimination of ageism and encouragement of positive attitudes towards older people
  • a range of culturally appropriate services that allows choices
  • promotion of flexible work options.

Positive Ageing

The Council held a questionnaire in September 2008 on whether Wellington supports the current lifestyle, working styles and recreation needs of retired residents, and whether those yet to retire envisage that their needs will be met.
