Pruning Public Trees

Aborist at work

Council arborists plant and prune trees on road reserve and footpaths. Other trees on road reserve are pruned at resident's requests, and as part of the Council’s on-going maintenance programme.

Trees may also be pruned if they:

  • overhang private property
  • obstruct footpaths or roads
  • obscure street lighting
  • obstruct vehicle access to public areas
  • obscure traffic signage and visibility at intersections
  • are growing within clearance requirements around power cables

Trees growing on private property are the resident’s responsibility. Trees growing on road reserve are only pruned when there is a legitimate need, like avoiding power cables. Blocking views and casting shade are not adequate grounds for pruning.

Pruning Practices

The Council’s arborists prune trees to maintain the trees' health and longevity. Trees are pruned to keep their natural shape.

Cost

If you request pruning or tree removal, you may have to pay some or all of the cost of the work. This depends on:

  • how much you or the Council would directly benefit from the work
  • how urgent the need for the work is

Tree Removals

Trees growing on road reserve, foot-paths or public open spaces may be removed under certain conditions, outlined in the Tree Maintenance Policy.
