Parking sensors

A parking sensor is a small electronic device installed in the ground of each parking bay. It detects and records the time a vehicle arrives and departs in a parking space.

We've introduced about 3500 parking sensors in the metered parking spaces in the central city.

How parking sensors work

The sensors are very accurate and record the exact time a vehicle enters and leaves a parking space. The sensors are synchronised through a central server, which is set to standard New Zealand time. The devices our parking officers use are synchronised with the same server.

Timeframes

We carried out the work in four sectors. Once the new system was been tested in each sector, it’s ready to use.

All the sensors will be operating from 31 October 2016.

Loading zones

We may do loading zones later. We’ve prioritised installing the sensors in the metered parking spaces. Parking officers will keep enforcing parking restrictions for loading zones as per the signage.

About the system

We trialled two types of parking sensors in Blair and Allen Streets. We decided to use the Smart Parking parking sensors.

Smart Parking is a leader in parking technology. Other cities in New Zealand, Australia and around the world use this technology.
