Tenants of City Housing are responsible for practising fire safety. These tips are a helpful reminder:
- CookingNever leave cooking unattended. When cooking with oil or fat, always watch the stove. If the oil or fat is smoking, turn off the heat. Snuff out fat fires with a pot lid or oven tray and never take it outside. Drinking alcohol and cooking don't mix.
- Power pointsUse multi-boxes with circuit breakers instead of overloading power points.
- HeatersRemember the 'heater-metre' rule: keep furniture, clothes and curtains at least one metre away from heaters and fireplaces.
- FireplacesKeep an eye on the fireplace after use because ashes can take up to five days to cool.
- Electric blanketsAlways turn off your electric blanket at the wall before going to sleep. Have blankets checked regularly by a professional service person.
Smoke Alarms
Hobart Street flats, Miramar
Smoke Alarms save lives and property. The Council installs smoke alarms in all City Housing units, but you must ensure they are kept in working order.
Dust your smoke alarm every six months to prevent malfunction and nuisance alarms.
Test your smoke alarm every month by pushing the test button. It should beep. Change the battery when necessary.
Escape Plan
Establish an escape plan that suits your home and takes special care of young children and elderly. Talk about your plan with everyone in the house and practise it every six months. Remember:
- know two ways out of every room
- test doors and windows are clear and easy to open
- agree to an outside meeting place such as a letterbox or tree.
What to do in a Fire
- Shout 'Fire! Fire! Fire!' to warn others
- Crawl low and fast to escape smoke - 'Get Down, Get Low, Get Out!'
- Shut doors behind you to slow the spread of fire
- Go to your planned meeting place
- Get out and stay out; do not go back inside
- Dial 111 Fire Service from a safe phone
Dial 111
You will need to tell the Fire Service your:
- street name
- house number
- nearest intersection
- city and suburb or rural ID number.
Wait outside for the Fire Service to arrive. Tell them where the fire is and if anyone is still inside.
