Many places listed in the District Plan's Heritage List are also registered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. If a place is registered with the Trust, they can provide advice on how you should care for it and what changes if any may be appropriate. Registration does not necessarily mean that a place is protected. Protection of historic places is generally through the policies and rules in the District Plan.
You can find out whether a place is registered by contacting the Historic Places Trust directly. Contact details are listed below.
Archaeological sites are protected under the Historic Places Act 1993.
You should contact the Historic Places Trust
Archaeological sites are not listed in the Wellington City District Plan. However, some heritage places listed in the District Plan as being significant to tangata whenua are also registered archaeological sites with the Historic Places Trust.
The Council is currently working with the New Zealand Archaeological Association to update the information about archaeological sites in Wellington.
