New Zealand supporter at the Rugby Sevens

The NZI Rugby Sevens tournament was held at Wellington's Westpac Stadium on 6 - 7 February 2009, with England being victorious.

The tournament involved 16 international teams competing for points that go towards the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series.

Street Events

Events were held around town to celebrate the Sevens including a teams' parade and televised Sevens matches on giant outdoor screens. Courtenay Place was closed to traffic from Saturday evening through to Sunday morning, with tens of thousands of fans celebrating after the final match and throughout the night.

The IRB Sevens World Series tournaments started in Hong Kong in 2000.

New Zealand is one of seven countries hosting the 2008/09 IRB Sevens World Series, with Wellington continuing to host the Sevens tournament until at least the 2010/11 season.
