Preparedness - Public Education

Wellington City Council Emergency Management Office (WEMO) provides education services and advice about civil defence planning so Wellingtonians can prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of a mass emergency or natural disaster.

The following services are provided free of charge within the Wellington city area.

For Residents
Perparedness information packs are available from the Council's Contact Centre 24/7 service on (04) 499 4444.

For Businesses, Organisations, and Community Groups
Contact the Public Education Manager to access these civil defence resources:

• PowerPoint presentations on hazards for Wellington and emergency preparedness
• table-top scenarios on preparedness for and response to earthquakes and other hazards - helping organisations develop emergency plans and procedures
• practical exercises to help organisations carry out and review their emergency procedures.

For Schools and Early Childhood Centres
The Public Education Manager can help staff and students with civil defence and evacuation exercises. These exercises have a practical focus.

The civil defence exercises can include students learning how to:

• work together to lift and carry an injured classmate on a stretcher
• talk to each other on portable two-way radios
• get their parents or caregivers to assemble simple emergency packs at home.

The evacuation exercises aim at making sure that in an emergency:

• staff, students and parents know the evacuation procedures and, in particular, students know how to respond in the event of an earthquake
• evacuation procedures work
• the school / centre has the names and contact details of responsible authorised people to collect students
• there is an effective process for those authorised to collect students from the school / centre, including options when an authorised person doesn't arrive.
