Disability Reference Group

The Disability Reference Group (DRG) advises the Council on issues that concern people with disabilities in Wellington. The group responds to issues raised by the Council and to concerns expressed by people with disabilities.

The Disability Reference Group aims to:

  • help people with disabilities understand and participate in Council decision-making processes
  • build the Council’s knowledge of people with disabilities.

The Disability Reference Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month.

The group is made up of individuals living in Wellington city who have:

  • experience of living with a disability
  • awareness of the needs and issues affecting people with disabilities
  • the ability to represent broad interests
  • good networking relationships within their own community.

Members regularly report back to their own communities on issues arising from Disability Reference Group meetings.

Accessible Wellington Forum

The annual Forum is an important opportunity for the disability community and the Council to share ideas.

Discussion groups focus on specific themes and make recommendations for improvements. Past forums have produced:

  • a trial service for sign-language interpreting
  • a fax machine at the Council Call Centre
  • the Wellington Accessibility Map
  • increased mobility parking.

The forum is attended by the Mayor, Councillors, the Chief Executive Officer, Senior Management and other council staff.
