about toi Pōneke

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre is a home away from home in the heart of Wellington for the artists and creators who make up our city's vibrant creative community.

Why we are here

In 2005, residents of upper Cuba Street approached Wellington City Council for help to keep their artistic community alive in the face of rising rents and displacement by the construction of the Wellington Inner-City Bypass.

Recognising the importance of creative energy to the inner city, the Council created and continues to operate Toi Pōneke to be a hub of arts and creativity.

Toi Pōneke exists to:

  • connect, support and grow Wellington's creative communities

  • facilitate artists and creators' learning and career development

  • provide a friendly, safe space and great facilities

  • spark experimentation and innovation by bringing artists together.
