John Sidney Swan, a renowned architect, designed many of the most recognisable structures in Wellington. Erskine College in Island Bay and St Gerard's Church above Oriental Bay were both from his designs.

He began his career under the mentorship of architect Frederick de J. Clere before establishing his own firm with his brother.

John was also a founding shareholder in the Kelburne Tramway Company - the creators of Wellington's iconic cable car.
