In spring 1929, these Wellingtonians gathered to admire the blooms on this magnolia tree in the Wellington Botanic Garden (pictured). Nearly 90 years on, the same magnolia is still blooming.

The magnolia bank was planted in the 1920s. Following the practice of the time, this magnolia x soulangeana, or saucer magnolia, was probably 10 – 15 years old when planted.

The Botanic Garden has a long and growing history. When Wellington City Council became responsible for the Garden in 1891, it had already been taking shape for more than 20 years.
