The Council has partnered with Sport Wellington to deliver the Sports Talent Development Programme, which aims to increase the number of Wellington sportspeople achieving international sporting success.

Talent development

The programme supports a number of talent development projects aligned to national sports organisation (NSO) and regional sports organisation (RSO) athlete development, and is managed in partnership with Sport Wellington.

The sports bodies receive funding that goes towards helping young aspiring Wellington residents/representatives to progress through the sports high performance pathway - ultimately leading to international sporting success.

The funding is used for athlete and coach development in areas including strength and conditioning, mental skills, coaching workshops, personal development, and injury prevention and rehabilitation.

The Council recognises that talent development is long term, and has made a commitment to fund talent development (since 2007) to assist young Wellington sportspeople to achieve their dreams.
