Wellington City Council, with support from the New Zealand Community Trust, has constructed an artificial sportsfield surface on the upper field at Nairnville Park, Khandallah.

Background

The upper field at Nairnville Park previously had poor drainage and in rainy weather often couldn't be used for sport.

Benefits

The artificial surface will provide many benefits:

  • better meet the needs of sports groups by providing a quality surface for training and competition games
  • be able to be used in all types of weather
  • provide extra court area for the Nairnville Recreation Centre
  • help protect the lower fields at Nairnville Park.

The improved upper field will continue to be used for football (soccer) and rugby, and by other sports groups and schools.

Field

The playing field is 85 metres by 49 metres and has floodlighting.

Timeframe

Resource consent was granted in September 2008. Construction started in December 2008 and the official opening was held on 4 April 2009.
