Each year the Council invests funds in projects that stimulate and nurture creativity and innovation in the city.

These projects are part of the Council's vision to achieve global competitiveness by positioning the city as 'Creative Wellington - Innovation Capital'.

Some of the creative projects the Council supports are listed below.

Awards

The Council sponsors a variety of awards that foster creativity in Wellington. The awards are for businesses and individuals who have contributed in creative and fresh ways to the city.

The Council sponsors the following:

  • Absolutely Creatively Wellington Award This award goes to an individual who has demonstrated creativity and innovation through their work in the Wellington region. The work must have had local impact. This award is part of the Wellington Region Gold Awards, which recognise leading businesses in the region.
  • Absolutely Creatively Wellington Ambassador Award This award goes to an individual who has shown creativity and innovation through promoting a product or service overseas and gaining international recognition. This award is also a part of the Wellington Region Gold Awards.
  • Creative Industries Award This award is part of the World Class New Zealand Awards, which recognise New Zealanders who are making an outstanding contribution to New Zealand's economic development.

Partnership with Toi Māori

The Council has been developing its relationship with Toi Māori, an organisation which promotes Māori Art nationally and internationally.

In 2005 the Council sponsored two Toi Māori projects:

  • Whenua - an exhibition at the Tinakori Gallery in Featherston Street
  • Tuwhare - a CD of leading New Zealand musicians performing Hone Tuwhare poems set to original music.

Film Tribute

In November 2005, a tribute to Wellington's film and television industry was unveiled on the corner of Courtenay Place and Cambridge Terrace. The sculpture is called Tripod. The unveiling took place during the Screen Producers and Directors Association (SPADA) annual conference. The Council sponsored both the conference and Tripod.

7x7 Ideas Forum

The Council helps to present the 7x7 Ideas Forum, at which seven people speak for seven minutes each about new and exciting ideas. Each Forum profiles innovation and promotes dialogue among a varied group of people.
