Like other cities, Wellington faces a graffiti problem and every year thousands of dollars are spent removing it from Council buildings, structures and residential properties.
As graffiti negatively impacts on feelings of safety and property values, the Council has developed a new campaign to prevent and remove graffiti.
Graffiti vandalism or tagging is the illegal or unauthorised defacing of property (such as buildings, walls, fences or vehicles), with drawings, symbols or words. It is different from graffiti art, which refers to drawings, symbols or words on property, done with the property owner's consent.
If graffiti is not removed soon after it appears, it can become a magnet for more as graffiti taggers see their tags as ownership of a space. Graffiti taggers are persistent, so certain areas tend to be repeatedly hit.

These free kits can be picked up by Wellington city residents at the City Service Centre located at 101 Wakefield Street, and at the following libraries:
The campaign also includes the creation of murals, as well as closer work with local communities to prevent graffiti and increase the speed of its removal.
