Wellington City Council is proposing to construct an artificial sportsfield surface on the upper car park of the former Wellington Showgrounds, next to Rugby League Park.

Proposal

It is proposed that this artificial sportsfield project includes:

  • an artificial sportsfield of approximately 70 metres by 120 metres with floodlights
  • the construction of a perimeter mesh fence around the turf to provide security, ball control and keep animals off the turf
  • a changing room (pavilion) facility.

The artificial sportsfield would be used for training and competition games by football (soccer), rugby union, and other sports codes.

Funding for the project has been estimated at $1.5 million in the Draft 2009/19 Long-Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP). The project has been approved at the LTCCP Hearings Subcommittee, and resource consent has been granted. Construction could begin as early as December 2009.
