Wellington City Council is seeking ideas on ways it can achieve its broadband vision for the city.

Mayor Kerry Prendergast today asked interested industry players to submit ideas on ways the Council can achieve its broadband vision of affordable, high-speed broadband access throughout the city by 2012.

"We want to hear from potential industry and investment partners on appropriate business models for achieving the Council's broadband objectives, what the role of the Council and other stakeholders could be, financing options and other technical details.

"It's important to note that this process is an information gathering exercise and does not involve any commitment by the Council to undertake subsequent work or discussions on any of the proposals," says Mayor Prendergast.

"Wellington city is fortunate enough to have had significant investment in infrastructure from telecommunications companies. What we have is good but we want it to be better. We want to see unconstrained open access to high-speed broadband right across the city and the Wellington region. Affordable and fast access to broadband is one of the key objectives of the Wellington Regional Strategy.

"The Council has agreed that it has an important role to play in ensuring the provision of broadband infrastructure in Wellington city. That exact role is still to be determined but should become clearer through the process. The Council's role could include providing access to Council assets, advocacy, facilitation, regulatory changes or involvement in a public-private partnership. The Council has a history of ensuring access to basic services such as water, sewerage and roads. Broadband is rapidly becoming one of these basic services.

Ideas must be submitted to the Council by Friday 1 June 2007.
