Mobility Parking to be Easier in Central City

Mobility card holders in the capital will find it easier to get a park in the central city early in the New Year.

Wellington City Council is expanding its mobility parking scheme, adding 16 new mobility parking spaces and improving the distribution of spaces across the central business district.

The existing time restrictions applying to the parks, which end at 6.00pm, are also to be expanded to cover 24 hours.

City Council Social Portfolio Leader Councillor Stephanie Cook says the changes will be welcomed by the disability community.

"Increasing the number of parking spaces will ease problems that some people are having in parts of the city. Making them apply for 24 hours will allow the disability community in Wellington to enjoy the city's nightlife like everyone else."

Previously, mobility spaces were created only after formal request, which led to an ad hoc distribution, says Cr Cook. The new, integrated approach means a better placement of mobility parks.

The changes are part of the Council's Accessible Wellington Programme, which Cr Cook says aims to make the capital an inclusive, accessible city.

"We want Wellington to be a liveable place for people with limited mobility. Better parking helps them take part in employment, social, cultural and political life and improves their access to services and resources."

The new parking spaces are located in central areas where people need to park, and more will be added in the next couple of years.

Signs indicating the time restriction change to 24 hours will be put in place in January, while the new parking spaces come into existence in February.
