A quiet time of day on Wellington's Lambton Quay

There are a number of initiatives and agencies in Wellington and New Zealand that promote and safeguard the employment interests of people with disabilities. These range from legislation (Human Rights Act 1993, Bill of Rights Act 1990), to organisations such as the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust (EEO) and Wellington City Council, among others.

Businesses that are members of the EEO encourage diversity by promoting the recruitment and development of people on the basis of merit.

National Disability Strategy

New Zealand has a national disability strategy, which aims to make New Zealand a more inclusive society by eliminating any barriers that prevent people with disabilities from participating in and contributing to society.

The Office for Disability Issues is responsible for making the national disability strategy a reality. This strategy is being implemented in the government sector first.
